Electric vehicles diametrically change motorization, setting new challenges in front of manufacturers of parts and lubricants. In “emission-free” cars, there are much less elements known from cars with combustion engines - this also refers to fluids. Against all appearances, they have, however, a lot of common denominators with their combustion counterparts. One of the pioneers in development of operating fluids for electric vehicles is TotalEnergies.
“Although in electric vehicles there is no, e.g. oil for lubrication of combustion engines, then against the commonplace opinion there are a lot of components which require using special operating fluids. These vehicles include systems in which liquids circulate. Their task is to, e.g. lubricate, insulate and cool down new types of drive trains and gearboxes. Liquids are also needed for adjusting temperature of vehicle batteries and energy management system. TotalEnergies as the first company in the world placed on the market two series of fluids designed specially to meet the needs of hybrid and electric vehicles: QUARTZ EV for passenger cars and RUBIA EV for trucks”
- explains Andrzej Husiatyński, Technical Department of TotalEnergies Marketing Poland.
- Dielectric properties - fluids used in electric vehicles must be insulating to prevent generation of an electric arc. It is so because they are in close contact with electrical/electronic parts of vehicles. Dielectric properties must remain stable all the time, despite difficult working conditions: increased temperature, oxidation, moisture, metal pulp from wear of working mechanical components.
- Compliance with used materials - the fluid must be compatible with different types of materials to avoid the following consequences: corrosion, swelling and cracking. Copper is a key material in these uses. Its high electric conductivity makes it the main element used in electrical cables and winding. Therefore, it is extremely important to develop a fluid with perfect compatibility with copper. The fluid even at high temperatures must provide proper anti-corrosion protection.
- Thermal properties - an electric motor and its fittings must work in a given scope of temperatures. Work at temperatures higher than the desired scope inevitably decreases life, efficiency and power of vehicles. Joule-Lenz law allows determining the amount of heat that is generated during flow of electric current through a conductor. The higher the voltage the more that heat. Therefore, a very important function of the fluid is to ensure efficient discharge of heat at temperatures of up to 180°C.
- Standard lubrication functions and anti-wear properties - to protect different mechanical parts of new drive trains. The fluids must ensure proper lubrication which guarantees correct work of individual systems, reducing their wear and phenomena such as oxidation and corrosion. It also offers optimal friction properties on friction disks, required for smooth change of gears in hybrid vehicles.
As part of the said product ranges it is necessary to list the following fluids:
Quartz EV Drive R - ensures a special technology for the new generation of electric drive train reducers. It guarantees durability of toothed wheels and rolling bearings rotating at a very high speed. It demonstrates optimal anti-foaming and air releasing properties, for the whole period of exploitation of vehicles. Developed with perfect pumpability in mind, even at a very low temperature.
Quartz EV Drive MP - designed for reducers, electric engines and energoelectronics. It protects against short circuit and static electricity, ensures optimal control of temperature (even during quick charging) and compatibility with copper coils and polymer materials. Moreover, it demonstrates anti-wear properties (toothed wheels and rolling bearings).
Quartz EV Battery - it is a specially designed fluid for management of temperature of the system of batteries. It protects against short circuit and static electricity. It ensures very high resistance to oxidation and proper protection against the fire spreading risk. Apart from this, it maintains very low viscosity throughout the whole life of a vehicle, ensuring effective exchange of heat.
“As it was said, the battery cooling fluid must be insulating to prevent generation of an electric arc. It is important because it works in close contact with electrical or electronic parts of a vehicle. Dielectric properties must remain stable all the time, despite difficult working conditions: increased temperature, oxidation, moisture. All these fluids must be replaced in line with recommendations of a vehicle manufacturer. Late replacement or use of other fluids without appropriate approvals may be the reason for refusal to repair as part of the warranty”.
- adds Andrzej Husiatyński.
TotalEnergies Marketing Polska has been present in Poland since 1992 and has an established position on the market of motor oils. It offers products of two well-known brands: TotalEnergies and Elf. The company has also been rapidly developing the sale of asphalts and has been present on the market of industrial special fluids since 2008. In 2010, TotalEnergies Marketing Polska started imports and wholesale of fuels. In December 2014, the company launched its first petrol stations in Poland, thus entering the retail market. www.totalenergies.pl
