Several versions which considerably differ in terms of composition may occur within one oil viscosity class. TotalEnergies pays attention to and warns against consequences of potential mistakes. For example - there are 9 versions of 5W-30 oil in the TotalEnergies range!
First type approval, later viscosity!
Laboratory tests prove that a correctly composed oil may partially or even completely reduce such problems. Sometimes it is also about something else - it turns out that only a proper recipe of oil enables maintenance of necessary parameters of oil from replacement to replacement. Exactly for this reason, within one viscosity class there are different versions of “the same oils”. The only signpost in the whole chemical confusion becomes a manufacturer’s type approval, commonly called “admission” or “approval”. It is the type approval that specifies what mileage can be achieved with a given oil, whether it will properly protect the engine against the LSPI phenomenon or whether it will meet requirements of fuel injection units or the solid particles filtration system. An average customer is unable to see it but experts employed for production and composition of oils perfectly know that some specifications within the same viscosity class are not compatible with other or they even exclude each other, as they differ very much in terms of composition of the base of the additives used.
To sum up - the viscosity class is still an extremely important parameter characterising properties of oil. However, it turns out to be insufficient in the case of the increasingly large group of contemporary engines. Obviously - in emergency situations (e.g. during a holiday trip) you can fill up a shortage of oil with a refill bought at a station (preferably within the same viscosity class) without greater damage to the engine. But already after coming back home, you must replace the oil as soon as possible using one that has the appropriate approval from the engine manufacturer. All this results from the care of life of the engine or diesel particulate filter. If someone takes care of a car, they should not have any doubts about this.
Finally, we are presenting exemplary types of TotalEnergies oils within one viscosity class 5W-30. They are 7 different products which extremely significantly differ in terms of their use.
Quartz INEO MDC 5W-30 – has the highest norm for Diesel EURO 6 engines in Mercedes type BLUE-TEC, additionally fulfils the latest standard of OPEL OV0401547 exceeding the requirements of Dexos 2. It is also recommended by Hyundai/KIA.
Quartz INEO ECS 5W-30 – an oil made to meet the requirements of Peugeot-Citroen for petrol and Diesel Euro 4 and 5 engines.
Quartz INEO R-Plus 5W-30 – special composition allows to meet the latest standard of Renault RN 17 for petrol and Diesel EURO 6 and 6d engines.
Quartz INEO C4 5W-30 – special composition with reduced ash content and increased quantity of phosphorous additives to ensure longer exploitation of dry DPFs and diesel engines of Renault before 2018.
Quartz 9000 NFC 5W-30 – a product created to meet the requirements of FORD 913D standard for petrol and diesel Euro 4 engines. Large pressure was put on energy efficiency of the oil.
Quartz 9000 Future FGC 5W-30 – special composition of the base and additives to meet the requirements of the latest GM Dexos 1 gen 3 standard. It has been designed for petrol GM engines with supercharge and direct injection. It reduces the LSPI phenomenon, decreases the formation of high-temperature deposits, has a positive influence on cleanness of rings and a turbo-supercharger.
“While choosing an oil for your car, you had better be guided by the symbol of the relevant type-approval of a given engine manufacturer. The type-approval requirements are available in the car instruction manual, and the type-approval/admission symbols should be printed on the oil label”.
