UTTO oils in the TotalEnergies range

TotalEnergies is one of the leading manufacturers of UTTO oils. Due to their specificity, they are used basically only in agriculture. At the same time, they are among the most advanced lubricants on the market.

While in the case of engine oils, agricultural machinery is content with oils with specifications corresponding to the diesel engines of HD vehicles, the requirements for gear oils are already far more sophisticated. They are met only by UTTO oils, which are not found anywhere else. It is therefore worth explaining where the demand for UTTO oils came from, what these oils are, and what their specificity entails.

Need is the mother of invention

Today's agricultural machinery has a highly sophisticated drivetrain, whose individual solutions are the result of years of technical evolution. One of the unusual features here is the common housing and common lubrication for the gearbox, front and rear axles, wet braking system, hydraulic lift, portal gears, and front and rear PTO units. This design is much better protected from mud and dust than on older generation machines, where all these components worked separately. While common lubrication for transmissions, axles and gearboxes seems the most natural thing, the inclusion of a clutch and ... wet brakes in this system is already an irrational solution. However, it turned out that this can be successfully done, precisely thanks to UTTO oils.

UTTO - basic information

UTTO stands for Universal Tractor Transmission Oil, freely translated as universal tractor transmission oils. At first glance, it may seem to be about budget oils that can be used for various applications as a last resort. In practice, the opposite is true. UTTO oils are one of the primary lubricants used in modern agriculture around the world. Manufacturers of agricultural and industrial machinery and vehicles use just such oils for the first assembly, and due to certain design solutions, they cannot even be replaced by other products. UTTO oils are expected to be of the highest quality and exceptional durability, as they operate under much higher loads during the season than the oils used in ordinary cars. It is worth noting at this point that not every oil brand has UTTO oils in its range. What's more - UTTO oils are the „apple of the eye” of agricultural machinery and tractor manufacturers and receive special approvals from them.

Where are UTTO oils used?

UTTO oil is the kind of oil that is poured into the gearbox, front and rear axles, the wet brake system, the hydraulic lift, portal gears, and the front and rear PTO units. As we mentioned, in many machines these systems share a common oil circuit, so it is impossible to replace UTTO with anything else. Therefore, we can write that UTTO oils are at the same time very versatile, but also extremely specialized, because, on the one hand, they work both where friction should be reduced (for example, in transmissions) and where this friction should be increased (in wet brakes or synchronizers). To make it even more difficult - within the brakes, high dynamic friction and low static friction are expected, but already within the clutch - high static friction. All this is possible thanks to a special composition of additives that reacts differently with individual surfaces in selected areas, so that the right effect is achieved every time.

It is worth noting that UTTOs are used for all types of transmissions - both manual and automatic with torque converters and CVTs.UTTO oils can also work in hydraulic systems and there it is necessary, for example, reduced foaming ability and adequate viscosity to transfer loads and guarantee shear resistance.

An additional function of UTTO oils is to maintain the seals of the mechanisms and the hydraulic system to reduce or even eliminate possible leaks and the associated loss of the fluid and environmental contamination.

Manufacturers' approvals

TotalEnergies works with all major truck and agricultural vehicle manufacturers and with major transmission manufacturers, namely ZF and GIMMA. Both of these brands certify selected UTTO oils with their approvals.
In the case of ZF, these are: - TE-ML 03, TE-ML 05, TE-ML 17, TE -ML 21. In the case of the GIMMA brand - CMS M1145, CMS M1143.

Summary

UTTO universal oils are in many cases the only correct choice suggested by manufacturers of agricultural and industrial machinery. The use of separate oils for individual components is not possible from a design point of view, since they share a common lubrication system. Pouring an oil other than UTTO in such a situation can shorten the life of the equipment in question, disrupt its operation or cause both effects simultaneously. All the information given in this material is confirmed in the manuals of individual machines and equipment. Very often there are also suggested lubricant specifications and approvals, which can also be found on the corresponding packaging of TotalEnergies' UTTO range of products.
