Gear oils are always in the shadow of engine oils, which appear most often in the media and in advertisements. Meanwhile, these are also very advanced and extremely important products. TotalEnergies presents the most interesting proposals from this section, explains how many kilometers you can drive on them without replacing them, and justifies why it is safe for cars and beneficial for the shipping company's wallet.
At first glance, gear oils can be distinguished from engine oils by the SAE viscosity grade. The use of a much higher numbering, e.g.: 75W-80; However, 80W-90 or 85W-140 does not mean that these oils have correspondingly higher viscosities. Paradoxically, in terms of viscosity, 5W-30 motor oils are similar to 75W-85 gear oils. Such markings are only intended to distinguish the use of the products. A possible mistake on either side will have serious consequences. Pouring engine oil into the transmission may result in its accelerated wear. A reverse mistake will quickly lead to the accumulation of impurities in the engine and its significant corrosion.
The most popular classification of gear oils (e.g. API: GL-4, GL-5 and GL-4/GL-5) determines only the intended use of a given product for the gearbox , axle or both. It does not mean either the quality of the products or the possible mileage.
Another characteristic feature of gear oils is the significant difference between the shortest and longest oil change intervals, unprecedented in the case of engine oils. These differences are gigantic, because the lower limit here is approx. 80-100 thousand km, and the upper one even over 500 thousand km. Interestingly, the suitability of a given oil for a given interval is confirmed by the manufacturer's approvals (e.g. MAN 341.Z1 or MAN 341.Z5.) It is generally assumed that for short intervals of 80-100 thousand km, mineral oils are used, for medium - semi-synthetic oils, and for the longest ones, over 500,000 km - synthetic oils.
Traxium Gear i Traxium Axle range
Traxium Gear and Traxium Axle are available in drums only.
API GL-5 oils (for axles) are not suitable for gearboxes gears, because the EP additives used in them (in such a large amount) will cause accelerated wear of synchronizers (especially brass ones as a result of chemical reactions).
Similarly, GL-4 oils should not be poured into the rear axles, because they will have too little EP additives.
From 80 thousand km up to 500 thousand km!
However, it is worth emphasizing here that the difference in the price of TotalEnergies Traxium 01A and 01E oils will not be five times higher, but much smaller. This means that the use of an oil with a more stringent approval will be beneficial both ecologically and financially.
An example that impresses
Additionally, most of the top TotalEnergies gear oils have the FE (Fuel Economy) designation, which indicates that they are fuel-efficient oils. As a result of reduced frictional resistance, they give real savings in fuel consumption, which in truck transport are really visible on an annual basis.
Won't it hurt?
One of the best oils in the TotalEnergies range of gearbox oils is TotalEnergies Traxium Gear 9 FE 75W-80, which meets the highest standards of many gearbox manufacturers: API: GL-4; MB: 235.28; MAN: 341 type Z-5; VOLVO: 97307; VOITH CLASS B; ZF TE-ML: 01E, 02E, 16P.
The same applies to the replacement intervals for the drive axles and the Traxium Axle range. Most manufacturers in the vehicle manuals indicate the level of specification and what this means the maximum mileage under given operating conditions. The differences between the intervals are also significant: from 100 to 500 thousand km depending on the specification level.
Traxium Dual: both to the garbox and to the axle
Traxium Dual 9 FE 75W-90 - meets the highest possible standards for axles and at the same time can be successfully used for gearboxes.
An example is TotalEnergies Traxium Dual 9 FE 75W-90 oil, which meets the highest possible standards for axles and at the same time can be successfully used for gearboxes: API: MT-1/GL-4/GL-5; SAE: J2360; MIL: -PRF 2105 E/-L 2105 D; MB 235.8; MAN: 341 Z2, 342 S1; SCANIA:STO 2.0 A FS / STO 1:0; ZF TE-ML: 02B/05A/12L/12N/16F/17B/19C/21A; VOLVO: 97312; EATON; IVECO RAS1
The use of more expensive synthetic oils with the highest specifications for the transmission is very beneficial for the customer, because for a small extra charge, it can safely extend the oil change interval by up to five times. On the one hand, we use the best possible oil, on the other hand, we save on oil change costs without loss for the lubricated components. It should be remembered that transport saves not only expenses for service (oil, filter and labour), but also avoids the cost of stopping the car at the service station - the vehicle can be operated during this time. In addition, the best oils from the Traxium range with the FE designation reduce fuel consumption by up to 0.5% compared to mineral oils, which has an impact on operating costs. It is good practice to select specifications so that the oil change intervals in the transmissions are multiples of the engine oil change interval. This type of action, in business jargon, is called TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) reduction. For people who are wondering how to assess the hardships of operation and whether the car qualifies for extending the intervals between changing the oil in the transmission, I suggest paying attention to fuel consumption. If it is in the lower range typical for a given model, you know that the car is used lightly. If the wear is high, it means that the entire power unit is working under heavy load and then it is better to change the oil more often.
