March 28, 1924: TotalEnergies is 100 years old!

On March 28, 2024, 100,000 TotalEnergies employees in 120 countries around the world joyfully and proudly celebrated the company's 100th anniversary.

The 100-year history of TotalEnergies is a story about the world and energy from the 1920s to today.

A bold and visionary decision

On March 28, 1924, the Compagnie Française des Pétrole was founded in France, a country without access to oil. This bold and visionary move marked the beginning of the company's century-long history. To ensure the supply of energy to France, the company established business contacts around the world, adapting to the market's needs and developing throughout a century full of technological and geopolitical turmoil.

Pioneers for 100 years

Unlike our competitors at the time, we did not have access to local deposits. Therefore, we built our competitive advantage on foreign expansion and technological innovations. These two factors shaped our pioneering spirit. Over the years, we have constantly pushed boundaries—both technical and geographical—while adapting to changing customer needs and expectations. In this way, we have accompanied the extraordinary progress and development that took place in modernist society in the 20th century. We have also gained additional knowledge and experience, joining forces with Petrofina and Elf-Aquitaine, and recently with Maersk Oil, Saft, and Direct Energie.

Transforming into a multi-utility company

While oil dominated the 20th century, natural gas and decarbonized energy have a key role to play in the energy system of tomorrow. Natural gas is essential for the energy transition, supporting the development of renewable energy sources and serving as a substitute for coal, which emits twice as much CO2 during power generation. TotalEnergies is currently the world's third-largest player in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) segment. We are also one of the most dynamically developing companies in the world in the solar and wind electricity segments. Electricity is at the heart of decarbonization, and the 21st century will certainly be shaped by it.

Driving the energy transition

Since 2020, we have been consistently implementing a transformation strategy based on two pillars: hydrocarbons (including LNG) and electricity. Our ambition is to successfully carry out the transition and support our customers in their energy transition. Our challenge is to provide the world with the affordable energy it needs to thrive while reducing emissions. This is an "orderly, just, and equitable transition" resulting from COP28. Drawing on the pioneering spirit that has guided us since our inception, we will continue to adapt to market needs and, if necessary, transform to be part of the energy history for the next 100 years!
